GRO's origin story:
In 2017 a group of Trimble Township Residents participated in the Athens County Community Improvement Challenge, a county program which challenged communities to create a self-identified diverse group of stakeholders to partner with local government and Athens County to improve communities.
The Trimble Township/Glouster Team utilized their participation in this program to advocate for Athens County to establish a Land Reutilization Corporation (Land Bank), which the Athens County Commissioners established in January of 2018. This same group of citizens established a list of goals that included the redevelopment of downtown Glouster.
Upon conclusion of the 2017 Community Improvement Challenge some of the Trimble Township Team members joined the Glouster Community Development Corporation (GCDC) to continue working on the redevelopment of downtown Glouster. Beginning in January of 2018 members of the GCDC discussed how to improve downtown Glouster. The team identified two projects to begin Glouster’s Revitilization; the redevelopment of the Knights of Pythias building, a 3 story building at 106 High Street, and creation of an Open Air Public Event Space in downtown at the former Wonder Bar site. The GCDC members decided to house these projects in a new nonprofit called the Glouster Revitialization Organization (GRO), which will work towards the completion of identified projects. GRO is a registered 501(c)3 organization.
